Well we should probably decided on the topic/project first. Any ideas? Maybe go with building a bird habitat, focusing on attracting one or two specific types of birds. With this, the students can research those birds; examples of research: food and types of bird houses that attract each. Then they could build these houses as a collaborative project. Each day they could create an observations page in their bird log. This could include some sort of data tracking/recording, but I'm not sure on what specifically.
We could incorporate ePals by setting up the same project with a sistering classroom. They could exchange information about which types of birds they are tracking and then exchange information and ask each other questions regarding those birds and region.
That's just one idea! I have a couple more, but what do you guys think our project angle should be? And where should our ePals be from?
The idea you have is great! I was thinking something along those lines. Our ePals should probably be a class that it is either in the same state or maybe somewhere South. I think that will depend on what grade our project is focused towards.
I would suggest somewhere around 3rd grade. Right in the middle! Also, I think that we should focus on the characteristics of the birds that the habitat attracts. That way the students could draw conclusions on the birds that are in their local community and compare them with the e pals. Or something of that nature. Maybe we could incorporate both ideas.
I think comparing the the birds or habitats would be a great idea. I think to simplify the project you focus on one bird. Possibly the state bird? By comparing habitats are a focusing in on geography and biology which I really think is a neat concept. I havent gotten a google invite yet so I'm wondering if anyone has started this if not, I can.
Just sent everyone out a google invite. Looking back at my last post, I am sorry about poor grammar. Wow should have proof read that post lol. Anyways, I will get started on the doc if anyone wants to get started on the map let me know.
I think our route should maybe be a migration route? Where does our state bird, the robin, go for the winter? Is its habitat similar in the winter to Michigan in the summer?
Sounds fantastic, I'm trying to put together that google doc right now. Feel free to change anything. I obviously don't want to publish anything that doesn't sound right to you guys!
ok cool! So I looked the migration pattern of robins and it basically looks like they travel to the southern parts of California, Texas, Florida and Mexico. So would you suggest finding a school in one of those states to be our epals and having the route go there? or what?
Ohhh also, I was thinking fifth grade would be a good grade to revolve our project around because it would tie nicely into a biology lesson on habitat. Thoughts?
Hey Guys, Take a look at the Google Doc and tell me what you think. I think it might need a conclusion, but let me know. Once I know you guys are okay with it, I will upload it to the blog :)
ok I'll take a look. When I was looking over our directions for this week it states that we all need to add or delete something to the map. I don't know how to share it with you guys and I also don't know what all i need to do. lol! I mean I put in the directions for the school but other than that I'm not sure of what she wants.
Hey Killer, Just sent an invite to you for both a map and google doc, I added a description so that will be my contribution to the map. I'm not sure if Erica is with us, but I added her there too so hopefully she can get a word or two in on that. Let me know if you have any problems. Also if it is easier, just shoot me a text. Ok I viewed the map and I was thinking that we should include an actual route to a southern cali school where our pretend epals would be. I looked up a school....this is the address Lincoln School 2223 Plant Avenue Redondo Beach, CA 90278. What do you think? Sorry I'm not good with this technology stuff seriously!
I left it in the comment area. Do you think we should include observations of the birds they are researching? Maybe how often they visit the habitat by their school and what they are doing? Or just something of that nature!
I was thinking for this project project we keep them separated to distinguish relations between the habitat and the bird. By strictly observing the habitat, the students will have a great idea of why the bird does what it does when they research the bird. If that makes sense? This helps students think analytically.
Hey guys! Sorry I'm just getting all of this. Didn't realize you guys were chatting today. I tried to keep up on everything earlier this week, but the end of the week is the busiest for me. I added a few changes to the google doc... mainly just tense type edits. Also, just wondering, are we as the teacher assigning them a bird to research, like our googledoc says, or should we let them choose a bird in which they had observed/researched? Just wondering! Looks good though!
Well we should probably decided on the topic/project first.
ReplyDeleteAny ideas?

DeleteBy project angle do you mean purpose?
ReplyDeleteYeah I just meant what type of project did you guys want to focus on. So what grade level should we aim for?

ReplyDeleteI can start the map. Where shall our route be to? any ideas?

ReplyDeleteThat's a cool idea! I'll do some research on that and let you know what I find?

ReplyDeleteYeah, that sounds great!! I will wrap the idea of our project around that! Lets do, Southern California. :)

ReplyDeleteSounds great!!

I think that is great! I am not very good at this stuff either so don't worry, I wont judge lol. Just go for it!!!
ReplyDeleteLol! I saved the route. The starting location is a elementary school here in Kzoo. Do you think we need to add anything else?
ReplyDeleteAwesome, I don't know if we're supposed to add stops :/ maybe add Texas and Mexico because Robins migrate their too?
ReplyDeleteUmm,I don't know how to add stops. Do you? lol!
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA no!!! lol I can try...Key word "try" :)
ReplyDeleteJust did it :) we are good to GO!!! Read over it!

ReplyDeleteOk one sec! I also added a comment to the other item. I was trying to incorporate the things that Erica and I discussed earlier this week.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!
ReplyDeleteWhat did you add on the doc? I did not see it. Also what would you like to name our project?
ReplyDeleteI left it in the comment area. Do you think we should include observations of the birds they are researching? Maybe how often they visit the habitat by their school and what they are doing? Or just something of that nature!

ReplyDeleteOk I see! Well I guess we are good to go!
ReplyDeleteSweet I will post it! You wanna post the map?
ReplyDeleteSure!

I reposted our doc. Hopefully it looks alright!
